Dombo N°1
-19.902556,34.064250
Location
Mutanda zone, Buzi district, Sofala province. GPS (WGS84) S 19°54'09,2" / E 34°03′51,3”. ca. 100 m asl. Surveyed on 10 Sept. 1999 by Michael Laumanns and Jens Römer (BCRAGrade 4b). Length: 253,00 m. Vertical range: - 8,00 m. Access to the cave is made from the village of the Rego of the Mutanda area. The old Portuguese road has to be followed to the N until the next small village on the right hand side is reached. From there the cliff has to be ascended (no footpath). The cave entrance is very near to the cliff line, hidden in dense vegetation. It is a shallow collapse doline with a 6 m deep descent (climbable) in a rift-shaped opening.
Description
The cave consists of a main joint-controlled passage in N-S direction. The passage was enlarged by phreatic solution. The main passage has several branches, which are developed in EW direction. Some of them have daylight openings in their ceiling. One major side passage leads to the W and turns again into N-S direction forming a parallel passage to the main gallery. Ten sediment samples were taken from the cave for investigation of soil bacteria. In this context the temperature in the sediment (about 10 cm deep) was measured in the western parallel passage (22,1°C). An air temperature of 20°C was measured. The whole cave was filled with conglomerate sediments in the past, which were washed out in most recent time. All the walls of Dombo No. 1 are completely covered with an approximately 4 cm thick remaining layer of these reddish infillings. Different species of bats inhabit the cave. Beside a colony of about 1.000 Rhinolophides a small number of tiny Vespertilionides (presumably Miniopterus sp.) are present. No samples could be taken for determination purposes, although the locals use to hunt bats in the cave.
