Description
Unspecified clusters of storied dwellings (cave dwellings of open-air hamlets?) noticed STEIN, M A (1929a: 107) on the way from Ghorband (note 1) via the pass Shilkai- kandao (note 2) into the Kana valley (note 3): On the steep slopes above no forest was to be seen, but cultivation terraces rose in tiers to a height of a thousand feet or so above the rock-cut channel of the stream. Here and there rib-like ridges running down from the big spurs on either side of the valley bore clusters of storied dwellings. SITUATION: In an indistinct location. Having crossed the Shilkai kandao on an unusual route (climbing up to 9400 feet / 2865 m asl), the Gujar (goat grazer) huts of Charrai (note 4) were first passed before gaining the bridle path that comes down from the pass proper, which culminates at an elevation of 7,000 feet (2135 m). Later, at the village of Larai (note 5), the main valley of the Kana was reached.Unspecified clusters of storied dwellings (cave dwellings of open-air hamlets?) noticed STEIN, M A (1929a: 107) on the way from Ghorband (note 1) via the pass Shilkai- kandao (note 2) into the Kana valley (note 3): On the steep slopes above no forest was to be seen, but cultivation terraces rose in tiers to a height of a thousand feet or so above the rock-cut channel of the stream.
