Description
A nearly circular pit of croom (OLDHAM, T 1859: 148, Fig. 15) or small pit (LATOUCHE 1890: 16), which gave access tp coal, is indicated not only by the letter d (OLDHAM, T 1858: plate IX) but also as Coal 2'6- (12) (LATOUCHE 1890 plate).SITUATION 1890: In the northern corner of the plateau, called Umlotodo, on which the village of Lakadong stands (LATOUCHE 1890: 14) and about 400 m in a direct line north from the cave entrance to Krang –>Umtngier, which indicated by the letter b (OLDHAM, T 1859: 145, plate IX) and as Swallow Hole (LATOUCHE 1890 plate: Plan of the Umlotodo Plateau). SITUATION 1852: A short distance to the North-East of this (OLDHAM, T 1859: 148).CULTURAL HISTORY - human use coal mine: 1852: … another nearly circular pit or croom exposes the same coal again (at d on plan). In one place the bed is from eight to ten feet [2.45 m to 3.05 m] thick, while within less than twenty feet [6.1 m] it dwindles down to one foot. At the southern end of the croom a fault of slip, th walls of which a very irregular, cuts it off altogether. This break crosses the rocks from North-East by East [292.5°] to South-West by West [102.5°]. The same nummulitic limestone as before is here seen at about the same distance below the coal, eighteen or twenty feet [5.5 m to 6.1 m] (OLDHAM, T 1859: 148, Fig. 15). 1890: A small pit has been opened here, and is the only one now being worked, 200 maunds having lately been taken out for a tea plantation at the foot of the hills. The top of the seam, which is 2 feet 6 inches [0.76 m] thick, is only 6 feet [1.8 m] from the surface: a small heading has been driven into the coal to a depth of 2 feet [0.6 m] (LATOUCHE 1890: 16).
