Description
A … natural cavern, known as Paradesi pudai is said to contain a mysterious inscription as yet undeciphered (BASKARAN 2001) or, perhaps, scriptkarren resulting from dissolution of a limestone surface (note 1). SITUATION: Somewhere in the vicinity of the Thenaruvi falls, which were reached by walking from Kuttralam / Kuttalam (note 2) … along Puckle's path, named after the district collector [note 3] who laid it in the 1860s, to Thenaruvi and beyond. […] Last time when I was in Courtallam, a few years ago, … I got on to Puckle's path quickly, leaving the concourse behind. I walked up to Thenaruvi, so named after the enormous beehives [cliff bees, Apis dorsata] that hang from the rocks on either side of the falls, and sat on a boulder facing the falls. … I crossed the stream, stepping on rocks that jutted out, and reached Paradesi cave. I gazed at the mysterious inscription as yet undeciphered, on the wall of the cave, chiselled millennia ago, by some Buddhist or Jain monk, who sat here contemplating the meaning of life (BASKARAN 2001). GEOLOGY: Concerning hypogene limestone (marble), CALDER (1833: 8) is said to state … its occurrence in the Tinnevelly district near Courtallam (NEWBOLD, T J 1846e: 150).A … natural cavern, known as Paradesi pudai is said to contain a mysterious inscription as yet undeciphered (BASKARAN 2001) or, perhaps, scriptkarren resulting from dissolution of a limestone surface (note 1).
