DANISHAWAR CAVE, Erin Valley
34.408300,74.766700
Description
A certain Danishawar Cave, which appears to be a temple cave (note 1), is said to consist of a short cave passage leading to a cave chamber, which, possibly in the worst case, is large enough to hold 77 persons (ANGELETTI RIGON et al. 1987). SITUATION: At an unspecified location somewhere in one Erin valley (note 2) and at an elevation of about 1'830 m (note 3) or 2'285 m asl (note 4).
NOTE 1: The cave's name seems to imply a Hindu "ishwari" (Sanskrit: "Lady" / goddess) or "ishwara" ("Lord" / god) who called by the name of (or located at the site of) something along the lines of Dan…, Danga…, Danna…, Dunga…, etc. NOTE 2: Erin stream, mouth near N34°24'30”: E074°46' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003). The village of Erin is shown on AMS sheet NI43-06 Srinagar (U502 series, 1959 edition) about 5 km north-east from the NE-shore of Wular (Woolar) Lake (N34°30': E074°30') and thus at a linear distance of about 36.5 km in a direct line approximately NNW of Srinagar town. Wular Lake itself lies at a linear distance of about 40 km NW of Srinagar city (34°05'N: 74°49'E).NOTE 3: ANGELETTI RIGON et al. (1987) place Danishawar Cave about 250 m above the level (circa 1580 m asl) of Wular Lake. NOTE 4: The mouth of Erin stream is shown on AMS sheet NI43-06 Srinagar (U502 series, 1959 edition) at elevations around 7500 feet = 2285 m asl and thus 700 m above the level of Wular Lake.
