Description
Though -deiya guhawa- translates into God Cave it seems to be rather the opposite of a cave: A peak, on one side overhanging its base … (FORBES 1840, 1: 178). ETYMOLOGY: Deiya Guhawa (cave of the god) (FORBES 1840, 1: 177; PRIDHAM 1849, 2: 616) adopted HAUSIG (1984) as Diva Guhava (Himmlische Höhle) --the Heavenly Cave (note 1). SITUATION: FORBES (1840, 1: 177) places the peak at a short distance to the south of Samanala (note 2) where it appears but little inferior to it in height. PRIDHAM (1849, 2: 616) places the peak at a short distance to the south of Samanala where it appears but little inferior to it in height. CULTURAL HISTORY - religious folklore: FORBES (1840, 1: 177): … by natives its summit is believed as yet to remain unpolluted by human footsteps. A priest, confident in his sacred character, is said to have ascended so far, that the light was observed which he had kindled at night beneath the overhanging summit of this haunted mountain; next day he returned a confirmed mniac, and unable to give any account of what he had seen. There is nothing incredible in this story, for the dreaded mountain is apparently easier of ascent than Samanala; and we need not be surprised at the melancholy fate of the priest … (note 3). PRIDHAM (1849, 2: 616): … by natives its summit is believed as yet to remain unpolluted by human footsteps …niac, and unable to give any account of what he had seen.
