Description
The cave has several entrances : The main entrance that 3-4 m high and 2-3 wide, some puddles at the beginning (Anonymous [Arbenz T, Brooks S J et al.] 2015.04.03 Mss: Diary 2015.docx) gives access to a streamcave passage with lateral cave passages which contain secondary calcite formations (speleothems), including gour dams (rimstone dams), that allow photograph takers to take the usual cave photographs not only inside the cave but also out of the cave and back home. ETYMOLOGY: The origin, history and meaning of the apparently Synteng / Pnar Khasi cave name Krem Lyntung (note 1) was not understood by expedition cavers (Anonymous [Arbenz T, Brooks S J et al.] 2015.04.03 Mss: Diary 2015.docx; Anonymous [Brooks, S J et al.] 2014.04.05 Mss: Diary Meghalaya 2014 Second Edit). SITUATION 2015.02.05: In an unidentified setting and at an unspecified location west of the village of Umkyrpong (25°26'04”N: 92°34'48”E) and at estimated distances ranging between half an hour’s walk (Anonymous 015.04.03 Mss: Diary 2015.docx 5th February 2015 Thursday) and 45 mins (Anonymous 2015.04.03 Mss: Diary 2015.docx 6th February 2015 Friday) from a camp in which expedition cavers were kept in February 2015 outside of the populated place. SITUATION 2014.02.08: Somewhere in the vicinity of Umkyrpong (25°26'04”N: 92°34'48”E: 782 m) at an unknown location in an unspecified setting (anonymous Brooks, S J et al. 2014.04.05 Mss). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2015.02.06: Noticed features included two side passages near the large entrance. The first one terminated in a mud choke and the second lead back to known passage with another branch that became increasingly low and aquatic. … upstream, mostly walking and sometimes wading, following a very fine and well decorated stream passage up to 4 m wide and 6 m high, frequently accented by gour dams. … a large slab that had fallen across the main passage with 448 m surveyed (Anonymous 2015.04.03 Mss: Diary 2015.docx 6th February 2015 Friday). PROSPECTS 201.02.08: Due to the team departing the next day … caves have to remain just names on the “to do” list (anonymous Brooks, S J et al. 2014.04.05 Mss). PROSPECTS 2015.02.05: Expedition cavers had surveyed (looked around) but upon … having started the survey properly (8 series) they left because time was running (Anonymous 2015.04.03 Mss: Diary 2015.docx 5th February 2015 Thursday). PROSPECTS 2015.02.06: The cave was left ongoing beyond a large slab that had fallen across the main passage with 448 m surveyed. Along the route two side passages were also noted and marked but not yet surveyed (Anonymous 2015.04.03 Mss: Diary 2015.docx 6th February 2015 Friday). CAVE LIFE 2015.02.06: Unknown but the zoologist Shabuddin Singh was said to have collected on Friday, 6th February 2015 specimens whereupon expedition cavers understood that Shabu spent the day collecting sand sediment samples (Anonymous [Arbenz T, Brooks S J et al.] 2015.04.03 Mss: Diary 2015.docx 6th February 2015 Friday)..02.08: Due to the team departing the next day … caves have to remain just names on the “to do” list (anonymous Brooks, S J et al. 2014.04.05 Mss). EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2014.02.08: An unidentified Umkyrpong village headman, whose name was beyond the observation power of expedition cavers, had told Brian D. Kharpran Daly on 8th February 2014 the names of three caves which were recorded as Krem Lyntung, Krem –>Sakwe, and Krem –>Tarong (Anonymous [Brooks, S J et al.] 2014.04.05 Mss: Diary Meghalaya 2014 Second Edit: 8th February, Saturday). 2015.02.05, trip 1: Daphyrnai Sariang from Umkyrpong, then acting as a guide, walked Brian D. Kharpran Daly, D. Khlur B. Mukhim and Oana Mirela Chachula from Umkyrpong to the west, starting at the village end of the bridge, to find new caves. Four caves were found, the first one was Krem Lyntung, half an hour’s walk from the camp. The cave has several entrances, and the team began the surveying. The main entrance that 3-4 m high and 2-3 wide, some puddles at the beginning. After having started the survey properly (8 series) they left because time was running. They wanted to locate Krem Tarong, whch was said to be a bat cave (Anonymous [Arbenz T, Brooks S J et al.] 2015.04.03 Mss: Diary 2015.docx 5th February 2015 Thursday). 2015.02.06, trip 2: Oana Mirela Chachula, Simon J. Brooks and Cdr. Vijay Chhikara, accompanied by the photograph taker Michal Spigiel and the zoologist Shabuddin 'Shabu' Singh walked from the camp to Krem Lyntung which despite a struggle to locate the final path to the cave took 45 mins. Shabu spent the day collecting [specimens from] sand sediment samples and Michal took first steps in cave photography. Oana, Simon and Vijay surveyed the two side passages near the large entrance. The first one terminated in a mud choke and the second lead back to known passage with another branch that became increasingly low and aquatic. Oana, Simon, Vijay and Michal then headed upstream, mostly walking and sometimes wading, following a very fine and well decorated stream passage up to 4 m wide and 6 m high, frequently accented by gour dams. Whilst Oana, Simon and Vijy surveyed, Michal proceeded ahead and took photographs. The cave was left ongoing beyond a large slab that had fallen across the main passage with 448 m surveyed. Along the route two side passages were also noted and marked but not yet surveyed. The team then returned to the waiting Shabu and took a more direct route back to the camp (Anonymous 2015.04.03 Mss: Diary 2015.docx 6th February 2015 Friday).
