The southernmost of the stepwells in western India, most likely excavated from basalt, seems to have been reported when one of the less disreptuted Internet website drew the attention of gentlemen with a taste for stepwells to consider that one well near the temple has steps leading down (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratnagiri accessed 2006.06.13).
