Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

An unspecified cave entrance (unidentified shape, unidentified dimensions, unidentified orientation, unidentified characteristics) is said to give access to complex sandstone cave with multiple entrances (Anonymous 2012.03.10 Mss Meghalaya 2012 Team 2 Diary entry Friday 10th February 2012). ETYMOLOGY: No autochthonous, indigenous or locally known name has been identified -- if it exists -- for the first of multiple entrances to one or several caves or cave entrances that were said to have been collectively called after the locality -Lawadong-, which appears to mean something along the lines of a Forest Area or Forest [of the] Hide-Out (note 1). SITUATION: Unknown (note 2). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2012: A complex sandstone cave with multiple entrances (Anonymous 2012.03.10 Mss Meghalaya 2012 Team 2 Diary entry Friday 10th February 2012). CAVE POTENTIAL: Andre Abele told me (2012 March personal communication) that it is more than very likely to find an extensive and complex network comprising ens of kilometres of inconveniently sized but penetrable cave passages which honeycomb the several square kilometres wide terrace in which the unconventional Lawadong caves are formed. To prevent further exploration and deeper knowledge, an anonymous and perhaps soon worn-out contributor preferred to brush all aspects of the local cave potential away and decided that This area can be considered as finished (Anonymous 2012.03.10 Mss: Meghalaya 2012 Team 2 Diary). The only argument against considering this area as finished is, that this is not the case. It were some of the cavers, who were finished after a couple of unconventional caving, but even then it had become obvious that the speleography of the area has been but superficially investigated. An unspecified cave entrance (unidentified shape, unidentified dimensions, unidentified orientation, unidentified characteristics) is said to give access to complex sandstone cave with multiple entrances (Anonymous 2012.03.10 Mss Meghalaya 2012 Team 2 Diary entry Friday 10th February 2012). History

EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2012.02.10, trip 1: Unidentified knowledgeable local people familiar with the area (no names mentioned) stepped out of their way to lead Georg, Jean-Pierre, Andre, Simon, Helen, Ronnie and Hiamdor (Georg Bäumler, Jean-Pierre Bartholeyns, Andre Abele, Simon J. Brooks, Helen Blyth, Ksan Kupar 'Ronnie' Mawlong, and Hiamdor Rapsang into the entrances of caves collectively recorded as Krem Lawadong (Anonymous 2012.03.10 Mss: Meghalaya 2012 Team 2 Diary). On this occasion, Georg, Jean-Pierre, and Andre commenced surveying the first 426.28 m of survey leg lengths in the upstream of a complex sandstone cave with multiple entrances (Anonymous 2012.03.10 Mss: Meghalaya 2012 Team 2 Diary). 2012.02.10, trip 2: Simon, Helen, Ronnie and Hiamdor attempted to find the other caves that were reported to lie in the vicinity of the village. However, this was not possible as no one was around who knew where the caves were. Not wishing to waste the remainder of the day the team setoff to Pyndemsohsaw Village where they located Luyiang 1, 2 and 3. (Anonymous 2012.03.10 Mss: Meghalaya 2012 Team 2 Diary). 2012.02.11, trip 3: Andre Abele, Georg Bäumler, Jean-Pierre Bartholeyns: … look for and find the canyon where is the upper entrance of the cave. Two more galleries are surveyed in it. They observe animal prints / claw marks high up in the passage roof which may have been made at an earlier geological time [e.g. five minutes ago] when these parts of the passage may have been easier to reach (Anonymous 2012.03.10 Mss: Meghalaya 2012 Team 2 Diary) for a civet that decided to leave such noisy intruders alone.
