DEOTI, Tadhiar (Cave at)
30.841700,77.945800
Description
Two cave entrances are said to give access to what has been described as if it were a true tunnel cave that drains a perennialy stream. SITUATION: In an unspecfied spatial relation somehow »near« (Glennie 1939 Mss: Preliminery [sic!] report) an unidentified temple (no name mentioned) at the village of Deoti (note 1), which lies above the orographically right (locally north) bank of the Tons River and about a kilometre or two in a direct line approximately north-east of Thadiar (note 2). CAVE DESCRIPTION: An unspecified cave entrance is said to descend down to the water of a stream cave with a cave passage leading to a second cave entrance (Glennie 1939 Mss: Preliminery [sic!] report … after »Hindu priest« without identified name). CULTURAL HISTORY -- through trip (cave legend): »A Hindu priest, still living at Deoti near Tadhiar about 40 miles from Chakrata [note 3], tells the following story: There is a deep cave near his temple and he was trying to measure its depth with a string when he fell in. He fell 1000 feet into water and emerged four miles away unharmed, and the God said to him: "Now that you have plumbed the depth of my stomach [note 4], I hope you are satisfied." This cave is evidently worth a visit« (Glennie 1939 Mss: Preliminery [sic!] report). CAVE POTENTIAL - Prospects: The cave at –>Thadiar has been reported from the same vicinity.
NOTE 1: Deoti (±1 km) N30°50'30”: E077°56'45": circa (±120 m) 1600 m asl (AMS sheet NH44-08 Ambala, U502 series, 1959 edition). NOTE 2: Thadiar (±1 km) N30°58': E077°57': (±120 m) 1160 m asl (AMS sheet NH44-08 Ambala, U502 series, 1959 edition). NOTE 3: »40 miles from Chakrata« (Glennie 1939 Mss: Preliminery [sic!] report) correspond to a travelling distance of 65 km along pony trails and 32 km in a direct line approximately NNE (30 km north, 10 km east) from Chakrata (30°42'N: 77°51'E). NOTE 4: Little doubt remains that a Victorian frame of mind led the army man E. A. Glennie to distort the originally reported female reproduction organ or "womb" (in Sanskrit: garbh yoni; Latin: uterus) into a hypocritically correct digestion organ or »stomach« (sic!).
