Description

NOTE 1: The »tourist tower« (Caldi Khongsit 1997.03.17 personal communication) is a concrete structure, which the MTDC (Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporatin) had planned as a »Royal Orchid Lodge« and developped into a rapidly deteriorating eye sore cum cold drinks stall. It is easily recognized by its outstanding ugliness which mars the face of the world near (±100 m) 25°16'05”N: 91°44'12”E (Gebauer, H D 1995 November unstable 4-channel GPS Garmin 4) and about a kilometre approximately south-east from the lower Sohra (Saitsohpen) Sumo stand and bus stop (±4.4 m 25°16'12.8”N: 91°43'56.2”E: 1316 m, Gebauer 2007.03.09 GPS Garmin 12).

The sight of an impressive waterfall, which emerges incoherently from dense vegetation covering the sub-vertical cliff face, of which at least an estimated 30 m or 50 m of height is visible on a colour photograph that had been taken during a rainy season (1996 or earlier) by Caldi Khongsit from Sohra (1997.03.17 personal communication). IDENTITY: Unknown. SITUATION: »Near the tourist tower [note 1]« (Caldi Khongsit 1997.03.17 personal communication) and rather above the orographically right (western) than the left (eastern) bank of the deeply incised and locally almost 900 m deep gorge of the river Umstew / Um Stew (east of Sohra). CAVE POTENTIAL: Since Caldi Khongsit's waterfall jumps from a steeply inclined escarpment or sub-vertical cliff without any visible water-course leading to it, the water feeding the fall can be expected to issue from a high yielding resurgence cave.
