Description
A sacred cave (temple cave) with dwar (sin testing constrction) in gravitationally dislocated Greenschist boulders is situated about 300 m below Tashiding Gompa (note 1), where a path to the left (off the path to Tashiding village) is marked with an inviting -Padmasambhava Cave- signboard. Following some 500 m the slightly downsloping path (the hill is on the right-hand side, the valley to the left), a small house built of stones is reached which stands next to the cave. CAVE DESCRIPTION 1849: On the north side of Tassiding [village], and close to the summit [on which the monastery stands], there are some rocky crevices which emit heated air … (CAMPBELL 1849: 535). CAVE DESCRIPTION 2001: A flight of white-washed steps (Scherzer 1997.05.07 Mss: 2.5 m high; Kirsamer 2001 Mss: 1.5 m high) ascends to the main entrance. On the top of the stair is a painting (0.4 by 0.6 m) depicting Chenresig (Kirsamer 2001.02.04 Mss) or Chenrazi etc., yet another name of Guru Rinpoche, Guru Padmasambhava, nd so on. CAVE CLIMATE: CAMPBELL (1849: 535) noticed on 30th December 1848 at 5 o'clock in the afternoon an outward air current and measured somewhere north of Tassding [village] and close to the summit air temperatures in … rocky crevices which emit heated air; at 5 P.M., the external air was at 51° of Faht. [10.6°C], in one of the crevices it was 64° [17.8°C].nd so on. EXPLORATION HISTORY: 1848.12.30: A. CAMPBELL (1849: 535) mentions no sacred cave somewhere north of Tassiding [village] and close to the summit but noticed unspecified rocky crevices emitting comparatively warm air. 1996.10: Uwe Scherzer (1997.05.07 Mss) surveyed 12.1 m of cave passage. 2001.02.01: Harald 'Harry' Kirsamer (2001.02.07 Mss) and Anette Scherzer, visited, read and recorded a GPS position.
