BRAGPOCHE no. 5 (Cave on)
28.858300,83.852800
Description
Immediately above the cave at –>Bragpoche no. 4, and already in calcareous sandstone (Jurassic: Lias), opens a 45 m wide and almost 10 m high rock shelter at about 4800 m asl (barometric). The south-western limit, however, lies considerable lower than the north-eastern end. Judging from the glacially polished area in front of the cave, glacial erosion is likely to have contributed to the cave's juvenile stage. The water trickling from the sediment's strata, which are often torn wide apart, is busily co-operating with the high number of freezing & thawing cycles at this altitude. Dissolutional surface forms are lacking. Similar to Cave 2 and Cave 3 is this object overrun by occasional surface torrents (waterfalls, dirtslides, landslides) which flush frost shattered debris down the scarp in front of the cave.
