BIRHENDRA GUFA (Gebauer 1980)
28.190300,83.952800
Description
Three neighbouring collapse dolines (sinkholes) drop up to 14 vertical metres down to a bit of common horizontal cave passage with blocked continuations in-filled by washed-in sand. The cave, almost in ruins, is an example of conglomerate karst in a mature state of cave development. Compare –>Birendra Cave, Bhalam. SITUATION: East of Tashil Ling (Tashilling, the Tibetan refugee camp) and south of the road from Pokhara to Butwal and Tansen. The cave entrances are sort of hidden in a rugged and barren landscape where most of the consolidated stratum, which covers the conglomerates of the Pokhara River Terrace, is weathered away. The vicinity of this almost ruined cave is riddled with numerous collapse dolines and seasonal sinkholes.
History
EXPLORATION HISTORY: 1980.02.02: H. D. Gebauer reconnoitered the area in search of caves formed near the rim of the Pokhara terrace, found three enterable collapse dolines leading to subterranean, named the cave Birhendra Gufa (in honour of the father of King Mahendra) and surved 36 m of cave passages leading to blocked continuations infilled with sand.
