Description
Numerous low caves and rock-shelters or natural caverns (note 1), probably in gneiss, reported FOOTE (1879) from Kulathur, Kolatur, Kulattur (note 2). SITUATION 1879: The low caves (FOOTE 1879: 144-145) are two miles (about 3 km) south of Kolatur or Kulathur, which lies from kilometre 20 or 23 (or so) off west the National Highway NH45 from Tiruchchirappalli (note 3) south-west to Dindigul (N10°21': E077°57'). SITUATION 2008: Archaeological Survey of India (asi.nic.in, accessed 2008.05.31) places SI no. 129 … Eight natural caverns, Jain idols and inscriptions in Kudagumalai, Aladiperumal paraika at the locality: Kulathur (sic!) in Pudukkottai district. CAVE DESCRIPTION 1879: … [page 144 not seen] … outcrop and along the plane of an important joint occupying a nearly horizontal position, giving rise to numerous low caves and rock-shelters [see –>Kulattur caves and shelters] which are yet used by for various purposes by field labourers. The basset edge of the bedding coincides with he run of the hills, and the dip is westerly (FOOTE, R B 1879: 145).
