(Mitabwa, Shaba) Co-ordinates: E 027°10'32”; S 9°9'5”. Alt. 1,050 m. Located in the Upemba national park 10 km NW from Mukama. Situated on the left of the road from Bunkeya towards Mitwaba.
Description
General description
Precambrian limestone. Explored in 1957-1958 by the Section Spéléologique Elisabethville and the Spéléo-Club Jadotville (Dumont 1960). The cave is actually an extensive subterranean complex including Grotte de Kiwakishi and the nearby Grotte Casteret. More than 6 km reportedly have been mapped (Buffard 1984). The cave has many dripstone formations and an active level. A biospeleological article was published by Williers (1961). Plan according to Buffard (1984). Anciaux de Faveaux (2002) mentioned a length of over 3 km.
