Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 06/01/2018

A relatively low cave entrance (2 m wide, 0.7 m high) gives access to a cave passage in limestone where a hands and knees crawl across a sandstone floor leads not only to a rimstone dam but also to the front of a relatively impenetrable blockage which is easily penetrated by flowing water but prevents humans from proceeding further upstream. ETYMOLOGY: No autochthonous, indigenous or locally known name has been identified for what has been christened Disong Overflow Cave (Harper 2001) not only because it is rather a perennial spring than a seasonal overflow (note 1) but also because the only known entrance to this cave and spring lies close to the village of Lyba and opposite across the Umiam / Umiew from Disong. SITUATION: The GPS position recorded for the cave entrance indicates a spot which lies less than a kilometre south-east from the village of Lyba (N25°11'40”: E091°38'00” WGS84) above the west (orographically right) bank of the Umiew or Umiang, which outsiders take as the hella River (note 2). The village of Disong (N25°11'45”: E091°38'10” WGS84), however, lies opposite across the river and a full kilometre approximately NNE from the cave entrance. APPROACH: Follow track on LHS of Shella River (i.e. Umiew / Umiang) for about a kilometre to where ... is gully on RHS road with active resurgence cave is at foot of cliff at head of gully (Harper, Rob undated 2001 February Mss: Disong Overflow Cave; Harper, Rob 2002.04.31 -megahlay.doc- entry #28). CAVE DESCRIPTION: Keen observers arrived at noticing an estimated cave passage length ranging between about 30 m (Boycott 2001.10.14 personal correspondence), about 15 m (McManus, s.a. = 2001) or exactly 15 m (Harper 2002.04.31 Mss) and relatively short (Harper 2001 February Mss -Disong Overflow Cave- undated).CAVE CLIMATE: Boycott, Antony 'Tony', Helen Harper, Rob Harper and Stuart McManus noticed having felt inside this cave an air current at an unidentified time and recorded that it was draughting in a unidentified direction.hella River (note 2).
