Description

General description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 11/04/2016

A stream from the approximate north-west (which flows somewhat parallel and about 500 m north of the stream sinking in the main insurgence entrance of Krem –>Mawmluh Cave) disappears underground in a bay at the north rim of Lum Lawbah. This sinking stream obviously corresponds to one of –>Yule's Sinking Rivers. ENTRANCE HISTORY: In February 1998 there was --below a small limestone quarry-- an enterable entrance, about 1.5 m wide and 1 m high, which lead to an uninspiring, wet and low passage. About 30 m due south and at an approximately 10 m higher elevation, there was a hole (0.8 by 0.2 m) in the level floor of a limestone quarry. This was too small to be penetrable for Yvo "spiderman" Weidmann (on 14 February 1998) but showed a murmuring flow of water below. In March 2001 the quarry had reached the entrance area and the sink --still taking water-- was clogged with mud and limestone chips. The hole above had disappeared --buried in waste or quarried away.

History

EXPLORATION HISTORY: 1844: »The formation of the limestone rocks near Cherra gives rise to a curious phenomenon in the disappearance of streams in their hollows … There are at least four such instances in the immediate neighbourhood of Cherra« (YULE, H 1844: 616).1854: »In several places about here, considerable streams go underground for some distance« (OLDHAM, T 1859: 29). 1998.02.14: H. D. Gebauer and Yvo Weidmann had a quick look at the very first few metres and, being preoccupied with identifying an other cave, postponed commencing to survey and explore immediately. 2001.03.07: H. Daniel Gebauer and Harald "Harry" Kirsamer learned that John Lennon had been a wise man as soon as they found the sink buried in limestone quarry waste and entirely inaccessible (note 1). 2007.03: Sebastian Breitenbach and H. D. Gebauer make a detour to check the current situation and find the sink still hopelessly clogged and a small runnel (less than half a liter on the surface) sinking between chips.
