Description
What appears to represent one of the few true fossil caves (note 1) --by now possibly quarried away-- which is (or had been) indicated by a Neptunian sandstone filling inside the Mahadewa series (sand- and limestones), reports Reverend HISLOP (1861) from Kamthi (note 2), a small town that lies at travelling distances of 8 km (note 3) or 16 km = 16 miles (note 4) approximately north-east of Nagpur city (N21°09': E079°06') on the Ramtek line of the SER (South Eastern Railway) and the National Highway NH7 towards Jabalpur (N23°10': E079°57' on India Road Atlas, Eicher Goodearth 2006: 72 C1). CAVE DESCRIPTION: HISLOP (1861: 199-200) observed in the Kámpti quarries … a purplish sandstone … unconformably above the Mahádewa -- the former filling up a hollow in the latter, which must therefore have been subjected to previous denudation.
