RIFT SINKS (Boycott & Stead 2004)
25.352100,92.523300
Description
A rift sink, initially thought to be only a large gryke (Boycott 2004.02.12 Mss: Rift Sinks) turned out to offer no prospects (note 1) in spite of containing what was understood to represent a two-dimensional chamber measuring 12 m x 5 m (literally quoted) with unspecified speleothems in addition to a second, larger chamber without any dimensions whatsoever. SITUATION (Boycott 2004.02.12 Mss): Down hill from Shnongrim village to NE of Synrang Ngap in bamboo grove [note 2]. CAVE DESCRIPTION 1 (Boycott 2004.02.12 Mss): Deep gryke 15 m by 1 m, possibly 10 m deep. Climb down at south end reaches end of gryke but too narrow to enter. 10 m to NW is tight draughty sink [where] stones drop 30 m - 40 m. CAVE DESCRIPTION 2 (Brooks, Simon J., undated manuscript amendment to Boycott 2004.02.12 Mss: Rift Sinks after personal communication 2004.02.18 with Nicola -Nicky- Bayley and Joseph -Joe- Duxbury): Dropped: 18/02/04. No prospects. 13 m pitch, large, well decorated [speleothems] chamber (12 m b 5 m) with large boulders and a second pitch of 8 m between wedged boulders to a large chamber [without identified dimensions, which yielded] 5 m further descent. Not ongoing. Explored to conclusion on 18/2/04. CAVE DESCRIPTION 3 (Brooks 2004 Mss: Survey Summary)): Length: 38, vertical: 26. CAVE DESCRIPTION 4 (Arbenz, T 2004.02 Mss: Abstracts.xls): Length: 38 m, vertical: 26 m, comment: yes [it is explored]. CAVE CLIMATE (Boycott 2004.02.12 Mss: Rift Sinks) noticed a draughty air current. 5 m) with large boulders and a second pitch of 8 m between wedged boulders to a large chamber [without identified dimensions, which yielded] 5 m further descent. Not ongoing. Explored to conclusion on 18/2/04. CAVE DESCRIPTION 3 (Brooks 2004 Mss: Survey Summary)): Length: 38, vertical: 26. CAVE DESCRIPTION 4 (Arbenz, T 2004.02 Mss: Abstracts.xls): Length: 38 m, vertical: 26 m, comment: yes [it is explored]. EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2004.02.12: Raplang Shangpliang and Bun Sukhlain guided Boycott, Antony 'Tony' and Jayne Stead to the site where the latter two recorded a GPS position (Arbenz, T 2004.02 Mss: Abstracts.xls; Boycott, Tony [Antony] 2004.02.12 Mss: Rift Sinks 12/2/04). 2004.02.18: Nicola Bayley, Joe Duxbury and Andy [Andrew] Heath visit and 'survey' (tape spotter standards) to a degree yielding an assemblage of lengthwise measured distances and successfully recorded a two to look at numbers, which include not only an interesting 38 (length) but also the rare number 26 (vertical range).
