Description

Michael Laumanns - 27/11/2015

Mazamba village, Massanza zone, Cheringoma district, Sofala province. 34°52'00'’E: 18°33'50' N (GPS WGS84), ca. 220 m asl. Surveyed on 23 Aug. 1998 by Herbert Daniel Gebauer, Iolanda Galletti, Michael Laumanns and Giancarlo Zaccaria (BCRA-Grade 2b - 4b). The Mazamba river is partly downcut into a very scenic valley surrounded by green vegetation, although it does not really show spectacular features like the karst gorges/canyons of Codzo or Nhagutua river. However, the wider valley makes the Mazamba river passable and within a distance of about 3 km downstream from the concrete bridge near Campira 9 small cleft caves in the rocky walls on both borders of the river and one Small vertical cave on the plateau east of the river valley had been surveyed. None of the caves is of real importance. However, together with a wonderful 8 m long and about 20 m high rock arch near the entrance of Ninga Miriango the small caves contributes to an ensemble which can be described as one of the most loveliest places visited during the field trips.
