Description
»Two caves, a small and a large one« passed William MOORCROFT (1815: 11), Captain Hearsay and Harka Dev PanditSITUATION: On way from Badrinath (30°44'N: 79°29'E) west and along the »Dauli River valley« (note 2) upstream towards the Niti Pass (30°58'N: 79°53'E). From Tapoban (note 1) upstream at a walking distance of 17'896 paces of 4 feet (1.22 m) each (about 22 km) and about 15 km short of Malari (N30°41': E079°54') . The two caves are suspected to lie in the vicinity of the camping grounds Tamak (30°35'N: 79°50'E) and Sbyama (30°36'N: 79°51'E) shown on AMS sheet NH44-06 Nanda Devi (U502 series,1958 edition).
NOTE 1: Tapoban N30°29'30”: E079°37'30”: 1800 m asl on AMS sheet NH44-06 Nanda Devi (U502 series, 1958 edition). Not to be confused with the Tapoban camping ground N30°55'49”: E079°08' shown on AMS sheet NH44-05 Dehra Dun (U502 series, 1959 edition) at the spot where the glacier Mecu Bamak joins Gangotri Bamak from south-west. NOTE 2: »Dauli River« (Moorcroft) is indicated as »Dhaliganga« on AMS sheet NH44-06 Nanda Devi {1958 edition) and positioned as Dhauliganga River N29°58': E080°37' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) on AMS sheet NH44-10. The river arrives from Niti Pass (N30°58': E079°53') and is approachable from Joshimath (N30°34': E079°34') by vehicle up to Malari town and beyond.
