A series of five to six caves and one cave where inside it has two mouths were said to represent the so-called caves in the Kiphere area - locally called the mimi cave (Sootinck, Neil 2007.12.12 personal correspondence). SITUATION: Within Tuensang district in a certain Kiphere area (Sootinck, N 2007.12.12 Mss) or Kiphere subdivision and Kiphire Subdivision (note 1) or in the vicinity of Mimi village from the Naga Ophiolite Belt area in Kiphire District bordering Myanmar (AIER, I A 2009.07.01). APPROACH: Either Mimi, the village, or Kiphere (Kiphire) was said to lie at a travelling distance of 254 km (note 2) along roads from Kohima (N25°40': E094°07'). CAVE POTENTIAL: Neil Sootinck (2007.12.12 personal correspondence) had spoken with the present Commissioner,who attempted and probably went in for a few meters (?). He says there are a series of five to six caves and one cave where inside it has two mouths and here a B I G python has been living for a very long time (note 3). EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2007.12.12: Neil Sootinck, Shillong, e-mailed having heard about caves in the Kiphere area - locally called the mimi cave (Sootinck, Neil 2007.12.12 personal correspondence). 2007: Dr. I. Anungla Aier (Project Coordinator, Anthropological Society of Nagaland, Kohima) provided a press release which journalists in the pay of one Morung Express interpreted as relating to a research program launched in April 2007 … [and] carried out under the aegis of the Research Project Cultural History, Ethnography and Physical Characteristics of the Nagas of Nagaland by the Anthropological Society of Nagaland, sponsored by the Department of Art & Culture, Government of Nagaland. … The Anthropological Society of Nagaland has also termed as significant the discovery of an early Neolithic cave site in the vicinity of Mimi village from the Naga Ophiolite Belt area in Kiphire District bordering Myanmar … (AIER, I A 2009.07.01). 2009: … a team led by Dr. Tiatoshi Jamir … Dr. David Tetsoand Dr. Zokho Venuh, carried out the excavation [and] has been conducting extensive exploration on the limestone caves since the early part of January this year (AIER, I A 2009.07.01).
