Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 15/07/2016

A huge fallen gneisseous boulder shelters a sub-triangular area which covers about 12 square metres, and opens to the south-east. The level floor is thickly covered with te ashes of countless camp-fires. SITUATION: Several rock shelters of different sizes are found on the trek from Sindhupalachok district of Helambu to the Gosainkund lakes on the border to Rasuwa district at Laurebina pass (4609 m asl) and the Langtang valley below. Some lie in the rain-sheadow of overhanging rocky cliffs, others are found in gravitational rifts, and yet others are situated below solitary fallen boulders. Of these rock shelters, Gapte Odar is the most famous one (see also –>Gapte Khola Odar). It lies just below the only house (November 1911) of Gapte, on the south-eastern slopes of Thare Danda ridge, at about halfway between Tharepati (or: Tadepati 85°30'E : 28°01'N) and Laurebina pass (Laurevina 85°26'E : 28°06'30”N) on the flanks of Gapte Khola, a tributary from the north to Tadi Khola.
