Local lore has lots of stories, but in truth the canyon gets its name from an early landowner named Charles Slaughter who raised cattle in the area.
He ultimately donated the land to the National Park Service to protect the canyon and the many caves that lay in it, including Slaughter Canyon Cave itself.
